ANDREW Fitton is still waiting to talk to the five men at the top of his managerial wish list - but insisted yesterday's draw was all about the current men at the helm.

Town's chairman designate refused to talk about Paul Sturrock's successor after watching caretaker bosses Dave Byrne and Ady Williams stretch their unbeaten run to four games.

It is believed Martin Ling, Micky Adams and Steve Cotterill are among those being courted for the hot seat at SN1, with Byrne and Williams giving the new owners something to think about.

Yesterday's 1-1 draw with Swansea was a clear sign the players are playing for the temporary duo and Fitton was keen to let nothing take away from their achievements.

He said: "I am not even sure you should be interviewing me today because today it is the manager's day. I thought we played good football and that is a credit to to the manager, his staff and his players.

"I don't think today should be a day to talk about who the new manager is going to be.

"That was a good performance. He deserves a lot of credit for that. Being a caretaker-manager is not easy and I thought we played the best football I have seen played here this season. Fair play to the guys, they have done a good job.

"I genuinely think Dave is an excellent coach so we did not have any fear of putting him in charge. He did have some exceptional circumstances at that time when the results were not going our way.

"He had a lot of injuries and you had the boys sent off against Rovers so that was eight players out. It was no real surprise they picked up when the players came back and he has them playing nice football again."

Fitton watched Town's battling display from the directors box but afterwards accused referee Mr Melin of spoiling the game.

He said: "It was a good game. The referee ruined a good game of football though because for the first 20 minutes I thought we had the measure of them.

"I thought we were playing some nice passing football but I don't know what the ref saw when he sent Barry Corr off.

"I thought it was very disappointing because it spoilt the game for everyone.

"You then had a real battling performance which was fabulous. It was compounded by everything seemed to be going against us, the odds were against us."
