SWINDON Town are close to bringing Tottenham Hotspur youngster Ryan Mason to the County Ground.

The Advertiser understands the Robins are still working on a season-long loan move for the highly-rated attacking midfielder, who has previously had spells in the Football League with Yeovil, Doncaster and Millwall, and the 22-year-old could sign on with Town in the coming days.

Swindon’s interest in the England Under 20 international was first revealed by the Adver back in May, but the chances of the Wiltshire club landing the Spurs prospect appeared to be diminishing as five other current or former members of the Premier League side’s development squad arrived at the County Ground.

However, it is believed that discussions regarding a potential switch for Mason to SN1 have continued throughout the summer and a deal now seems closer than ever.

Meanwhile, Town are understood to still be keen on former Watford midfielder John Eustace - who is currently training with Derby.

Swindon are believed to remain hopeful that they can tempt the ex-Coventry man to Wiltshire but Eustace, 33, is scheduled to sit down with the Rams over the coming days to discuss the possibilities of a contract at Pride Park.

Derby manager Nigel Clough told the Derby Telegraph: “John will be involved at Bristol and we will, hopefully, sit down at the weekend or early next week and see what we can do.

“We know his value over the course of a season. He knows it is going to be extremely difficult to get a start with the midfielders we have but he is willing to come and give that challenge a go.

“At certain times over 40 to 50 games he will be vital for us.

“John comes into his own when you are under the cosh for the last 10 or 15 minutes of a game. He is ideal to use in that situation.”
