TOWN are expected to complete the signing of Charlie Austin today, but boss Danny Wilson warned that the striker will not be the immediate answer to his side’s goalscoring problems.

After hitting an initial stumbling block with Wessex League outfit Poole Town, the Advertiser understands everything has been agreed for the transfer of the 20-year-old, who was in the stands watching his new side draw 1-1 at Exeter last night.

Wilson cut a frustrated figure at St James’ Park as Swindon went one up against the Grecians and created chance after chance to kill the game off, but failed to do so – only to see the hosts snatch a late equaliser.

However, the manager insists Town’s lack of cutting edge won’t be solved by Austin’s arrival just yet.

“We’re talking about a boy who’s been playing six or seven divisions below where we are, so to think he will be the proverbial big white hope is unfair to him,” Wilson admitted.

“Charlie has to get up to the pace of things and to the way we play football in this division. Who knows, you might throw him in just to see what happens and get lucky.

“But we’re putting no pressure on the boy and won’t say when he’s going to be in the squad. We just have to assess him every day in training.”

Wilson refused to be too downbeat following Town’s point in Devon last night, which stretched their unbeaten league run to nine games.

Instead he pointed to another promising display from his troops and an inspired performance from Exeter keeper Oscar Jansson.

“Again we’ve been in a great position and created some great chances but not taken the three points,” said Wilson.

“The second goal eluded us and we were unlucky because their keeper had a blinding game and pulled off three fantastic saves.

“We’re disappointed that we haven’t won the game, but it’s a good performance so we can’t be going away thinking it’s all doom and gloom.”
