DANNY Wilson has tipped former teammate Nigel Worthington for the vacant Sheffield Wednesday manager’s role, but admits he has little sympathy for his former side’s current plight.

The Owls parted company with boss Brian Laws at the weekend after slipping into the Championship relegation zone, and both Worthington and fellow ex-Wednesday player John Sheridan - who is in charge at Chesterfield - have been linked with the post.

Wilson played alongside Worthington at Hillsborough in the early 1990s, as well as being international colleagues with Northern Ireland, and believes the 48-year-old could be a real success.

“Nigel has had great experience now, particularly with the international CV behind him (of managing Northern Ireland),” explained Wilson.

“He is a very good manager and very capable - there’s no doubt about that.

“The fact that John has only just gone to Chesterfield with the ex-chairman of Sheffield Wednesday may affect him but I don’t know.”

Despite serving Wednesday as both a player and a manger earlier in his career, Wilson revealed it comes as no surprise - and no interest - to see them in another sticky situation.

“I’m not interested in that old club, I’m more interested in Swindon Town quite honestly,” he told the Advertiser.

“Listen, it’s been from one disaster to another at Sheffield Wednesday over about 15 years, so nothing surprises you at all.

“But it is of no consequence to me and doesn’t interest me.”

n TOWN have sold out their 3,800 allocation of tickets for the FA Cup third round tie at Fulham on Saturday, January 2.

However, the club have requested a further 2,000 tickets which are expected to go on sale at 2pm today.
