Town are locked in a battle with AFC Wimbledon for striker Adam Birchall after Dover Athletic accepted a bid from the Robins’ League Two rivals.

Birchall handed in a transfer request at the non-league side earlier this month, stating that he wanted to play League football.

Gillingham had a bid rejected recently and on Saturday, Dover accepted Town’s substantial five-figure sum for the 26-year-old.

But yesterday AFC Wimbledon entered the race to sign Birchall, meaning he is free to discuss personal terms with both clubs.

“Dover Athletic can confirm that the club has accepted significant undisclosed bids for striker Adam Birchall from Swindon Town and AFC Wimbledon,” read a statement from the club.

“The League Two club will also be making their payments up front and subject to personal terms being agreed with Adam one of the deals should go through in the next few days.”

Strikers remains high on Town boss Di Canio’s list of priorities, having ended his interest in Italian forward Christian Cesaretti and former De Graafschap frontman Hugo Bargas last week.

While Di Canio was not willing to discuss specific targets, he is confident he will have all his signings in place ahead of the club's final pre-season friendly against Reading on July 30.

“I am not worried,” the Italian told the Advertiser.

“The way we are working I’m sure that in two weeks time, by around the July 25, we will have a complete and fit squad, who can play together as a team and bring our ideas from training onto the pitch.

“We are still working on potential transfers until one or two in the morning, because it is important to understand the players we are looking at. We are watching how they work on the pitch, not just their technical quality but tactical quality, physical strength and attitude.

“For each player we are scouting we are not just watching one match but six or seven from different periods of a season and in different squads.

“I know that some people may think that this is too much maybe but I think a team who wants to win or change direction must do this.”
