TOWN have rejected an undisclosed offer from Swansea City for striker Rory Fallon with deputy chairman Mark Devlin reiterating the club's desire to hang on to their leading scorer.

This comes as manager Iffy Onuora looks to extend deals with members of his squad, many of whom see their existing contracts expire in the summer.

Fallon is among that number but Swansea have expressed their desire to land the 23-year-old.

Rochdale's Grant Holt is thought to be the Swans' top target with chairman Huw Jenkins prepared to splash out up to £400,000 for a forward.

Jones said: "Rory Fallon is one of a few players we have talked about. I think he's valued at around £300,000 or maybe £250,000.'' Devlin said: "All I can say is that we've received an offer and it has been rejected.

"We are hoping that Rory will sign a new deal with us."

Meanwhile for Onuora, forward planning is the key phrase with the manager anxious to avoid a chaotic summer where he quite literally doesn't know who's coming or going.

The bulk of his squad are on 12-month contracts or deals that expire in June and Onuora feels it is vital to address respective situations sooner rather than later.

He believes a good unit is being moulded together and he doesn't want to see it come apart.

Onuora said: "I have to say I think the players that are here already have done well, to the degree where we now look to the fact that some of them are only on one year deals that run out this summer.

"If there's an opportunity in January to address that situation and talking to those who've done well and are improving then I'll take it.

"It's just to give that sense that we're trying to keep this squad of players together as much as possible, which is what we're trying to do, to keep it bubbling.

"I'd rather send them on their holidays all signed up rather than the scenario we've had in the past where come July you still don't know whether x' is staying or going. It doesn't help, it's about forward planning."

As for fresh faces in the short term, the manager admits that a striker is probably the most pressing priority.

No joy as yet but he knows the type he would like.

He said: "I've spoken to a few clubs and I'm awaiting developments.

"We as a coaching staff are due to have a chat at the end of this week just to nail things down.

"We've talked in general terms, now we have to talk specifics.

"It's an ongoing, evolving process.

"We'd like assurances on players ASAP but there's enough time for us not to panic.

"Getting Petr (Mikolanda) and Aaron (Brown) in was very much 11th hour stuff. We don't want that situation again.

"You can and do make some of your phone calls a month or so in advance but over that month your priorities can change.

"I think a striker has probably become more of a necessity given that Tony Thorpe's gone and Petr's returned to West Ham."

Pace and power would be welcome qualities in any new player's armoury.

Onuora said: "We've got Rory, a good target man, Jamie's a goalscorer and more of a box player, we might need one whose a little bit quicker, maybe a bit more rugged and forceful.

"Big, powerful ones are nice to have around but they're not easy to come by. People don't give them up lightly."

Onuora hopes a deal for Andy Gurney will be tied up early next week while he is awaiting a response from Brown's agent regarding a deal with the player.
