PREDICTIONS LEAGUE: Brentford results and updates

What a brilliant all round performance and an even better result. I had this game down for a Town defeat and the Carlisle game as a Town win. So all in all, same result, just the other way round.

This time Town were able to capitalise on a defensive error for a change. And how cool was Louis T. Pinching the ball off Jonathan Douglas’ toe after a loose pass by the keeper to strike the ball firmly into the net past a forlorn Button.

The defense was able to withstand Brentford’s attacks second half which were at times lack-lustre. Even so, Troy, Jack, Jay and the outstanding Wes were able to keep a clean sheet which meant victory was ours.

FA Cup Semi Finals

NewburyMike v Glosteroldboy

This match up saw the battle of the mind games. Glosteroldboy had made a loan signing and his new striker, Derren Brown was making his debut.

NewburyMike, not to be outdone, engaged in some early sledging and found himself 2 up inside the first 10 mins. Glosteroldboy had no answer. Each attack was rebuffed and NewburyMike led at the break. 2-0.

The second half stared as the first half finished, Glosteroldboy renewed the pressure, but Mikes defence held firm. This called for something special. With time running out, Glosteroldboy managed a to fire in a cross that missed everyone except for the Brown. The ball flew into the net. From the restart, Brown saw Mike’s keeper off his line and lobbed the ball from halfway and levelled the tie. 2-2.

Extra Time.

Glosteroldboy went into the first period of extra time with the momentum and made it pay. Derren worked his magic and made a hypnotising run through the middle of the park and grabbed a brace while the NewburyMike defence were flapping their wings like headless chickens.

There was still time for another spellbinding moment. Another run from the middle of the park, another harsh challenge. Yellow card – free kick. NewburyMike set his wall. The keeper was ready. Yet Brown slotted the ball into an empty, unguarded net. Derren had managed to fool the defenders into protecting a mere illusion.

Glosteroldboy secures his place in the Final with a 2-6 win. Magical.

FA Cup Semi Finals

Guyswonga v Bondy54
= = = = = = = = = = = = = =

We have Premiership verses League One, as Bondy, the lowest ranked team left in the Cup hopes to defy the odds and get past an in form guyswonga to reach the Final at Wembly on May 3rd.

This match got off to a flying start. Bondy54 took an early lead through an own goal, but was quickly pegged back not once, but twice. Bondy managed to regain the lead, only for Guyswonga’s tenacity to find an equaliser against the run of play. 2-2, and half-time loomed. With all the play in Guys half Bondy was able keep up the pressure and latching on to a loose back-header managed to steer the ball past the keeper, Louis T style.

Half-time - Guyswonga 2 - 3 Bondy54

The second half got under way with Bondy54 in the box seat. Try as he might, Guyswonga could not find an opening. He was outdone by a swift counter attack and Bondy stretched his lead further. 2-4.

Guyswonga was on the ropes and was there for the taking. Yet Bondy54 took his foot off the gas a little too soon, and whilst he was knocking the ball around in his own half, Guyswonga managed to pounce on a stray pass, run a clear 20 yards and riffled the ball into the net.

GAME ON.

Well into stoppage time and all Bondy54 has to do is run the clock down. He takes the ball into the corner, but wait. He’s been robbed. The ball goes out wide and Guyswonga unceremoniously hoofs the ball high into the air. One bounce, two. Guy’s number 9 unleashes a thunderous shot. It’s on its way, goal bound, it beats the keeper and smacks against the crossbar. The ball comes back to the striker who this time manages to head the ball back over the keeper and into the net, just as the final whistle blows.

Full Time Score: Guyswonga 4 - 4 Bondy54

Extra Time

Guyswonga started off the first period of extra time with the momentum and soon found himself in the lead for the first time in the match with a goal coming from a scramble on the line. The ball bobbled around and somehow was toe-poked into the net. From the restart Bondy caught Guys defence cold. Still celebrating their previous goal, Bondy strung together 3 passes and the ball was in the net. Guyswonga’s lead lasted 45 seconds. 5-5.

Stunned, Guyswonga kicked off again, trying to regain his composure. The whistle blows to mark the end of the first period. It’s a straight turn around and we’re underway again. 15 minutes to play, this match could go either way. Can see it going to penalties.

Slick move by Bondy, a cross, a shot, GOAL!! You can’t back off your attacker like that Guy. Give him space and you’ve been punished. Bondy54 takes the lead again. Time is running out for Guyswonga. We’re just minutes away. We’re now into time added on at the end of extra time and there ain’t much of that.

Is there one last chance for guyswonga? Bondy54’s midfielder goes in heavy. Free kick and a red card. The ball is placed about 30 yards from goal, slightly off centre. It’s now or never as I’m sure the ref will blow his whistle after this phase of play.

WOW! Goal. The ball is whipped in with such pace up over the wall and leaves the keeper rooted to the spot. He only sees ball when it’s in the back of the net. And as predicted the final whistle blows.

Penalties.

Bondy54 – GOAL - Routine penalty. Low and hard into the bottom left corner - 1-0
Guyswonga – GOAL - Keeper sent the wrong way, nothing he could do about that - 1-1

Bondy54 – GOAL - The goes straight down the middle - 2-1
Guyswonga – MISS - Oh dear. Another player who’s had a good game but sends the ball over the bar, woeful - 2-1

Bondy54 – GOAL - Very confident. Hard and high to the top right, keeper had no chance - 3-1
Guyswonga – SAVED - Just the opposite to the last one. Always looked nervous, but it takes a lot of guts to take a penalty. Sadly he telegraphed where he was going and it’s an easy save for the keeper - 3-1

Bondy54 – SAVED - If he’d have scored it would have been all over, but the keeper makes an outstanding save. Guessing right he tips the ball around the post - 3-1

Guyswonga handed a lifeline. He needs to score with his next penalty or else it could all be over

Guyswonga – GOAL - That’s more like it. Great penalty. Top right, keeper didn’t move - 3-2

If Bondy54 scores he’s in the final.
Bondy54 – GOAL - He steps up, short run and sends the keeper the wrong way - 4-2

Guyswonga 6 - 6 Bondy54
Bondy54 wins 4-2 on penalties.

Just for your info. The penalty shootout was based on the following questions. I chose these went I was compiling the questions for the match, hence the four questions about attendance.

Score line: Both Bondy and Guy scored points and so both were awarded a penalty Goal.
Attendance: Bondy was closer to the actual attendance than Guy so was awarded a penalty Goal
Away Fans: Bondy was closer to the actual number of away fans than Guy so was awarded a penalty Goal
Attendance in L1: : Guyswonga was closer to the actual attendance than Bondy so was awarded a penalty Goal
Attendance in L2: Bondy was closer to the actual attendance than Guy so was awarded a penalty Goal.

Again, for your info, what if I used a different set of questions. There were 14 chances to score points. 5 questions resulted in points for both bondy and guy and therefore were discounted from the penalty shootout. Of the remaining 9 questions, Bondy was closest to the actual answer on 5 and guy closest to the actual answer on 2, with 2 questions tied.

I do believe there is a 90 point bonus for the most second places in the motm award or anyone whose name is an anagram of dazinblack, I think its under rule 54b of the STFC Predictions league.

Sorry dazinblack. Your MotM stats have been corrected to show your two awards.

The details of Rule 54b escapes me at the moment, but in any case Rule 108 comes into play.

Rule 108 - Fair Play
Section C
Sub- section ii
Paragraph 4 states

" Any points claimed to be owed to person or persons by deception, subterfuge, creeping and generally trying to be a smart ar5e will be investigated fully, and at the discretion of the moderator can be ignored, deducted and or re-allocated to person or persons as specified by the moderator "

I have chosen to ignore your claims.
