I was interested in Martin Webb’s letter with a breakdown of correspondents’ letter writing frequency.

As someone who doesn’t figure in the most prolific letter writing list, may I comment on the letter in the same issue of SA, by the most prolific Bill Williams and also W Gardner?

There is only one party, the Green Party, in Parliament in favour of an immediate referendum on EU membership, as soon as democratically possible, renegotiation of terms and, although here we depart from Messrs Williams and M Gardner, of continued membership of the EU.

When we say renegotiation we don’t mean negotiating to make the conditions of hardworking people worse.

We would negotiate to improve and strengthen workers’ rights and conditions, unlike the public school millionaires that head the coalition government or the Labour Party, that is supine in the face of newspaper owners.

We would also negotiate to strengthen rules on greenhouse emissions and the general greening of Europe.

Messrs Williams and Gardner also comment on a perceived lack of democracy in the EU and this should also be addressed, with more power going to the democratically elected EU Parliament.

It must be noted, though, that the EU is slightly more democratic than the UK, so we must bring our own house in order at the same time as that of the EU.

The Green Party are in favour of referendum, renegotiation and continued membership.
