I am happy with Des Morgan’s comments in the SA of 13 March regarding tax and its fairness, and accept that we need to protect the needy and vulnerable in our society, but I think the current method of local taxation needs serious reconsideration.
I was a supporter of the proposed poll tax many years ago, whereby every adult in every household would pay the same tax. After all every adult uses the local services and facilities and have equal responsibility for the needy, so why should every adult not pay a local tax? I call this fair and, broadly speaking, the system used nationally.
Regarding green waste and recycling, a large proportion of our community for reasons only known to themselves, do not recycle properly or as much as they can. This has a bearing on our tax so perhaps those who won’t recycle should pay for that privilege.
