YOUR correspondent J Trueman suggests that I was advocating car parking spaces for the disabled be ‘abused’ by other motorists. For him to do this, he must have been reading a very different letter to the one published in the SA.

I am very sorry that his daughter has spina bifida but nowhere in my letter do I suggest specifically designated spaces for the less abled should be removed or restricted, even less that an able bodied motorist should not use them.

What I did make clear was that in the case of holders of disabled badges and young mothers with children, just because there are special areas designated for their use, this does not preclude or prevent them from using any free space.

In other words, the whole car park is available to them should they wish and be able to use ordinary spaces. Indeed having a disabled badge does not automatically mean the individual disability is such that it requires the user to use a specifically designated space.

I then made the following comment, “On the other hand the ‘ordinary’ user is made to feel they have indulged in some criminal behaviour should they park in a reserved space to which they are not entitled”. I stand by that comment as it is true.

Mr Trueman opines that there are less disabled bays in relation to normal bays – that is also true.
