WITH reference to your article ‘Don't sit on the fence’ Tues 22 April, I question if we really need another allotment site in Swindon.
If this group can really make a go of it then good luck to them. However it will probably take the better part of three years to get the site cleared and planted.
It is not just walkers and dogs that might be a problem, to keep out vandals the fence will need to be very robust and about 8ft high. This could prove very costly to the plotholders and is there any guarantee of keeping the site after the three year lease?
There are currently 26 allotment sites in the Swindon Borough and of these 20 no longer have people on the waiting list and many of these sites have vacant plots.
Anyone wanting an allotment should get in touch with the Allotments Officer at Swindon Borough Council on 01793 445501 or email allotmentenquiry@swindon.gov.uk and get your name on the list. Check out the allotment website at www.swindon.gov.uk.
