NEXT year is the 175th anniversary of the Swindon Railway Works and there are going to be a number of activities and celebrations.

I have an idea which may be of interest. If the railway works hooter is recommissioned it could be sounded at what was then the original times, ie start of shift, midday break and finishing time.

This could be done just for the celebrations.

It could also be sounded on the Queen’s birthday if that would be appropriate.

I’m not sure if this story is true but I believe a lord of a manor had the hooter stopped because it was disturbing him. It may be fiction, I don’t know.

Anyway, that’s my idea so it would be interesting to read other people’s ideas for this event.
