QUIBBLING about the cost of the United Kingdom entering the Eurovision Song Contest will come to naught. Darn the expense, because Eurovision is a celebration of all things human – from music through madness to mayhem.

We all have these in common and the final in Austria on May 23 will be absolutely glorious. It’s like the Olympic Games, where taking part is the main factor. I love Europe!

Mr Crook (in his letter of March 14) said Engelbert Humperdinck did poorly last year with a “cheesy 12 points” and TV presenter Phillip Schofield said “it’s time to pull out”. In fact, ‘The Hump’ performed in 2012. The UK has done well since then. Our own Welsh goddess Bonnie Tyler scored 23 points in 2013 and lovely Molly scored 40 in 2014. Does Mr Schofield’s opinion carry any weight nowadays?

I know the voting is dodgy but it’s all good fun; a day of pure celebration and partying. Who really cares if the UK never wins again? We have our great legacy of immortal winners and our elite status means we can never suffer the indignity of relegation to any secondary qualifying competition.

Remember, Jade Ewen came fifth in 2009 with 173 points and Blue scored 100 in 2011.

The Eurovision Song Contest is wonderful and I will leave you with the following images. How else could we see the Finnish entry live? P.K.N. or Pertti Kurikan Nimipaivat are a punk band whose members live with Down’s syndrome and autism. They are aiming to raise awareness of disability and their achievement to take part in Austria is phenomenal. Let’s go there with them!
