YET again, more roadworks are coming to town - this time on the M4, with Highways England set to spend several months carrying out flood mitigation at Junction 16.

Undoubtedly, this will cause more misery for drivers held up as they struggle to get to and from work.

However, it’s often easy to forget that while roadworks may be annoying at the time, they are usually not being carried out for the fun of it by contractors, councils or other government departments.

If in a few years’ time, heavy rainfall led to large amounts of water building up on or around the motorway, the effects could be far more serious than a traffic jam.

Even if that didn’t happen, persistent rain can have a long term damaging effect, so it is right Highways England splashes the cash now.

That said, for anyone who has to regularly travel near both Swindon junctions of the M4 during rush hour, delays are a daily occurrence and this flood mitigation work is unlikely to ease morning and evening frustrations.

Fortunately there appears to be hope on the horizon as the final details of plans to upgrade the whole junction are put together in a multi-million pound upgrade.

A few rumbles of discontent have been heard from those who say they weren’t consulted on proposals which will not solve the issue, most notably from Royal Wootton Bassett.

Any project of this scale is never going to please everyone but those who use the junction on a daily basis must be listened to or millions could be spent without ever solving the problem.

These flood mitigation works may cause a few hold-ups but let’s hope it is the beginning of the end of a daily struggle for drivers.
