I WAS delighted to read that Justin Tomlinson and Robert Buckland support the campaign to bring a dedicated radiotherapy centre to Swindon. I would have expected nothing less for the town’s MPs.

However, I am not at all sure that the provision of such a facility should depend on the kind hearted altruism of the people of Swindon and the surrounding area.

It is acknowledged by clinicians that a need exists for a radiotherapy centre. Therefore, the NHS should provide the facility. How simple a concept is that to grasp?

I understand £2.9m is a lot of money, but as a part of the NHS budget it really is little more than loose change and only a small percentage of the severance payments made to some managers.

It is surely not right that a much needed medical facility as a radiotherapy unit should be funded by a claim on people’s charity.

This Government has committed to spend £12bn on Foreign Aid which will be spent on many projects which have nothing to do with humanitarian relief following some natural disaster, feeding the poorest in the world or providing medical aid to young children.

Millions will be spent on high salaried aid professionals and many other ‘things’ of a dubious nature.

Justin and Robert are to be commended for their support of the Brighter Futures Appeal, it’s just a pity that they are part of a system which denies Swindon residents the £2.9m it needs to provide the radiotherapy unit.
