I WAS horrified by your titillating headline "Student drank herself to death at raunchy undies party".

This was a sensationalist headline better suited to The Sun, not the Swindon Advertiser.

I worked with this girl Amanda at college and knew her as a sweet, sensitive artistic girl with great determination and courage, who was trying to lead a normal teenage life despite being severely affected by epilepsy.

It was quite an achievement for her to go on the course of her choice at university and to enjoy something of the freedom and independence of being a young adult away from home.

Your irresponsible headline in no way represented a sensible and sensitive picture appropriate to the circumstances.

I don't suppose you will be apologising to Amanda's mother for any distress your headline would have caused her and I don't suppose you will be publishing this letter.

  • Editor's note: Distressing as the story was, this wasn't a sensationalist headline and reflected what happened based on what was said at the inquest of Amanda Rapley-Redfern and the comments of the coroner. Both the headline and the secondary headline were accurate, and the story itself was a balanced article which dealt with Amanda's tragic death and the issue of her epilepsy. We have spoken to Amanda's family, offering them a voice, but they have declined the offer.
