DRIVING up the hill approaching the junction between Tadpole Lane and Lady Lane, I was confronted by a utility van as it swept around the corner, well over the central white line and more on my side of the road than his.
The driver, of course, was glued to a mobile phone.
Using his only free hand he managed to steer the van back onto the left-hand side of the road before an impact occurred and then gaily waved an apology as he careered past with his phone still pressed to his left ear.
At that instant he then had no hands on the steering wheel!
Regardless of the severity of existing penalties, unless the law can be strictly enforced this sort of behaviour will continue and the innocent will ultimately pay the price.
Unfortunately, in practice, the police cannot be generally present when such incidents occur so what is the answer? I certainly had no time to note the registration. Even more sadly the perpetrator, in this particular case, no doubt considered himself to be a professional driver.
