I HOPE I am not alone in finding the case of the man who fathered his own grandchildren by raping his daughters for 25 years utterly unbelievable, not so much in the deed, foul and despicable as it was, but in the punishment.

He is to serve 25 life terms and will be released in 19 years! When hanging was abolished we were told that life would mean natural life, but he is actually to serve less than 10 months for each year of his crime. How can this possibly be justice for his two ruined victims and their children?

Yet again we see how urgently this nation needs a UKIP government, which would make the punishment fit the crime, where this man would actually never see the outside world again, simply because if sentenced to life imprisonment it would mean he would die in prison. And prison itself will cease to be a soft rehabilitation centre and become a punishment block, run on military glasshouse lines. Very few would want to return for a second spell inside.

A prison officer of my acquaintance says this would not work, because the prisoner, having nothing more to lose, could become uncontrollable. We have the answer to that as well - hard labour and solitary confinement for those who attempt to fight the system.

My sympathies to those poor ladies for all they suffered at the hands of a person who should have been their greatest protector.
