IN reply to Clive Hooper's letter of October 30, I agree whole-heartedly that our Labour government has completely failed students and their parents by introducing tuition fees. This has been something the Green Party and Liberal Democrats have agreed on for years! We have both tirelessly campaigned for the great equaliser of education to be free as a matter of principle. This was what made Nick Cleggs's speech at conference so disappointing. I understand many in your party were very unhappy too, as shown by a letter to the Guardian, by 18 powerful Liberal Democrat activists, threatening to block his attempt to keep the specific pledge on abolishing tuition fees out of your manifesto. I hope that he listens to those in his party who realise just how important this pledge is and understand that it is actually needed to help improve the economy and to protect services and jobs - your number one priority.
