WHILE my sympathy goes out to the family of Alex Szymanski, we must somehow get the message across to young drivers the dangers of the road. How many times do we see young drivers in Vauxhall Corsas or Citroen Saxos speeding around with loud music going to the same beat as the day before?

In my job I do a lot of driving each day, when I first passed my test in 1980 cars were much slower and the roads were less congested and yes, in my first year of driving I got a speeding ticket, but times have changed. I have lost count of the times a car has rushed past me only to see a sticker in the back with “little princess on board” or “caution child on board”.

How many times has anyone come out of the town centre over the Magic roundabout going along past the ambulance station to turn left onto Drakes Way in the left hand lane only to be cut up by another driver in the middle lane because he or she thinks it would be faster to use this lane? We need better driving standards and better policing.

We allow young people to sit behind the wheel of a car or ride a motorcycle even before we let them vote, yet these vehicles can be lethal weapons to themselves and others.

The young drivers are not to blame 100 per cent, we as a society have to get the message over that vehicles can kill you and others around you.

I know that my words may upset others and I would like to point out that I don’t consider myself to be the best driver in the world as we are all human and all make mistakes at times.
