WE'VE already had a cast-iron guarantee broken by David Cameron over the EU and this week we learn that pledge number one, as the Shadow Justice Secretary described it in June, on prisons will now be scrapped.

In 2007 Cameron announced that he would build 5,000 new prison places but has now had to do a complete U-turn on this policy. The Government had warned that the policy was incoherent and not properly costed when it was announced.

This is the same David Cameron who opposed tougher sentences for gun and knife crime, would take 3,500 police officers off the streets and would rather hug a hoodie than use ASBOs properly.

Since 1997 overall crime is down by 36 per cent, there are 16,000 more police officers and 16,000 new community support officers helping to put local people at the heart of neighbourhood policing.

Watch this space for the next broken promise from Cameron.
