JOHN P Hunter's response to my letter of December 8 failed to address any of the issues I raised concerning the serious shortcomings of nuclear power. Instead, he chose to recycle some of the stale and largely discredited criticisms of wind power.
Mr Hunter implied, without supporting evidence, that electricity from wind turbines is prohibitively expensive and that nuclear generation is cheaper. He advises "Those that don’t believe this are welcome to nip over to France and compare their energy bills to ours." I wonder how he reconciles this with the fact that France has greater installed wind capacity than Britain.
I agree with John Hunter that an urgent review of the UK's future electricity supply is needed. It will be a huge challenge to provide reliable, clean, safe and secure electricity supplies for the next few decades. The task will be made much easier if key decisions are based on facts rather than prejudice.
