SWINDON Think Tank met at 10am on January 13 at Cavendish Square Library, Park South, to discuss the various ways available to generate electric power.

Windmills are not efficient and only work if the wind is above 17 miles per hour. The idea is to reduce our carbon footprint but they are so expensive to build that they are not an economic proposition.

Wave power does not seem to be the way to go either, as the technology is not yet available to efficiently produce electricity from waves.

Solar panels are very heavy to put on the roof and users have to strengthen their roof in order to take the weight of the solar panels. More technical advancement is required to make them much lighter in weight for them to be value for money, and fit for purpose.

Nuclear power seems to be the most sensible and economic way to generate electricity on the scale required for our country.

The nuclear waste storage is not such a problem as it was with the older style nuclear power stations, because ways have been found to make the nuclear waste decay much quicker.

The Swindon Think Tank believe that nuclear power is the only viable option to provide the electricity required to keep the lights on, and the wheels of industry turning.
