I READ in the Swindon Advertiser that James Gray MP will be debating the outcome of RAF Lyneham in Parliament.
It seems that Mr Gray will be putting forward a suggestion that the army take over the base. Having been a councillor for Lyneham and Bradenstoke I sat on a task force of local people and attended meetings at the village hall to discuss any ideas for the closure. I have very mixed feelings about the army moving into the camp, not wanting the small village to become yet another garrison town.
But more importantly a regiment will bring with it many more road vehicles adding to the already crowded roads. I sincerely hope that Mr Gray has given thought to the impact that a regiment will have upon existing roads.
My personal view that the camp would be put to better use by giving it back to the community and open up opportunities for business ventures. The very fact that RAF Lyneham is closing defies all logic, economically, strategically, financially moving to a smaller base with fewer runways - making no sense.
