I've experienced two contrasting events in the past fortnight.

A highly successful training event for line managers at the Swindon Marriott, providing training for line managers in the management of stress in the workplace. Over 60 delegates attended and feedback was overwhelmingly positive. My personal view is that line managers are clearly interested and willing to manage stress effectively. All the delegates got involved in the event and it’s obvious that many practical and effective methods of management are already going on. Barring some understandanle concerns, these line managers wanted to know more and were happy to share good practice. All very positive and heart warming.

On the downside, I read a letter in the weekend press about the experiences of someone who has a history of mental ill health and is looking for work. You’ll probably guess that his experiences did not make for happy reading. A succession of rejections (all when he had revealed his history of mental ill health) and offers (when he had hidden it). Coincidence? Possibly, but it’s difficult to tread the fine line between cynicism and realism. All very dispiriting then.

The work’s not over until every employer is as committed and involved as those 60+ delegates.
