A TEENAGE fire service cadet has thanked the station that trained him up by jumping out of a plane at 15,000ft to raise funds that will help the programme survive.

George Edwards, 18, took the plunge on behalf of Cricklade Fire Station, which has kept its cadet group alive on a voluntary basis despite Government cut-backs.

He took inspiration from keen skydiver and crew manager Pete Price, who also runs the cadets.

The teenager raised £600 through the tandem freefall at Skydive UK in Dunkeswell, Devon.

Mr Price said: “We all think it’s outstanding.

“All the money will go directly to the cadet group to help the running of the centre.

“The group had closed because of the austerity measures but we have kept it open on a voluntary basis and rely on weekly subs and fundraising. Thanks to the generosity of George and others we are still going and gaining strength.”

George, who completed the jump four weeks ago, had been with the cadet group for five years.

Anyone interested in joining should attend Cricklade Fire Station between 7pm and 9pm on Wednesday evenings.
