HE’S Mr Gilbert the headmaster in The Inbetweeners, he’s deputy mayor of Klangbury in We Are KIang and he’s the tall bloke in countless comedy panel shows.

He’s Greg Davies, and when he brings his latest stand-up show to the Wyvern Theatre on Sunday, there won’t be a single empty seat in the house.

Fans have long since snapped up tickets for the Swindon leg of the tour, called The Back of My Mum’s Head, which has taken him all over the country. Tonight he’s in Dunfermline, on Saturday it’s London and on Monday it’s Northampton.

Born in Wales and raised in Shropshire, Greg worked for more than a decade as a teacher and began his comedy career in the early 2000s.

His television credits include Live at the Apollo, Mock The Week, Ask Rhod Gilbert, Would I Lie To You and Never Mind The Buzzcocks.

The Back of My Mum’s Head is only his second full scale stand-up tour. The first, in 2010, was called Firing Cheeseballs At A Dog, and was based on an acclaimed Edinburgh Festival show.

A reviewer from Time Out described him as a man destined for greatness, while a Times journalist wrote of him: “Rude, substantial, heartfelt, cunning.”

Other reviewers have praised him for storytelling that can be both hilarious and poignant as he highlights the absurdities of family life and life in general.

The title of the latest show refers to the last thing the young Greg would see whenever his mum became exasperated with some aspect of his behaviour.

Comedy website Chortle said: “The density of stories is most impressive. While many comics spin out their tales seeking laughs in the details, Davies distils many his yarns down to only their funny essence, moving quickly from one tale to the next.”

Fans who weren’t lucky enough to get hold of a ticket for the show should visit www.gregdavies.co.uk, where details of other tour dates can be found. They include an appearance at the New Theatre in Oxford next Thursday.
