Still In Love by The Yearning, out on Elefant Records.
This album could be a sound track for an American high school romance. Maddie Dobie, the lead singer, has a voice of sparkling gem stones spilling on to black velvet.
Joe Moore’s juke box jive music is the backbone of the band. He is originally from Faringdon yet his love of the rock ‘n’ roll kings, Phil Spector’s wall of sound, and Tamla Motown is reflected in every track.
If You Were My Boyfriend, has Maddie sounding distinctly Dusty without the husky, but on Heart Beats A Little Bit Faster, she has the power punch of Petula Clark. The song, Jeremy, captures the feel of the 1960s hit Terry, sung by Twinkle. It was a song about a boy who dies in motorbike accident and the girl is full of remorse and wanting a second chance.
They are all good strong tunes on this CD, telling a coming of age tale in glorious Hollywood technicolour.
It should be retro candyfloss but with such bubbly integrity it escapes the sweet as sugar candy label and takes us happily to the high school hop when the world was young and free and full of hope. - Flicky Harrison
