EMMA DUNN steps out with the Salsanativa group

PEOPLE of all ages can learn to dance like the stars of Strictly Come Dancing thanks to Salsanativa.

The group, which was founded by Sally Marsden, meet every Wednesday at The Great Western Hotel, opposite the railway station.

A beginners’ class takes place every week from 8pm until 9pm, and an improvers’ class takes place from 9pm until 10.15pm.

“We’re one big salsa family. Ninety-five per cent of people who come are single. People primarily come for a social reason, and secondly they want to learn to dance,” she said.

“Over the time we have been running we have probably put together more than 30 couples. We have had four weddings and we have just had our fourth baby too. Salsanativa appeals more to women than men but once the men come they love it and stay with us.”

The beginners’ group have a lesson from 8pm until 8.40pm, and then practise their routine for the last 20 minutes of the class.

The improvers have a lesson from 9pm until 9.40pm, and practise from 9.40pm until 10.15pm.

“We can teach anybody to dance, and when I say that I mean it,” said Sally.

“Really good dancers will only stay in the beginners for a week because they have got rhythm and can progress quickly. Other people stay in the beginners class for three or four weeks and then move up. We break them in really gradually and that way it doesn’t make them feel awkward and they can pick it up.”

Members range from about 20 to 70 years old.

“It appeals to everybody. They get more from the social side of things. The dance steps they learn are secondary to the company and friendship,” said Sally.

“People come and dance and then go home with a smile on their face.”

Sally teaches the beginners’ class, and also the improvers’ class alongside dance partner, Hender Corredor.

They also have Latin Parties on the last Friday of every month from 8.30pm until 1pm at The Great Western Hotel, which sees other groups from Oxford, Bristol and Reading also attending.
