ADHD sufferers and their families in the town now have some much-needed help.

A new support group has been set up for people with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, and aims to provide a network for those who need help and advice.

It will be meeting for the first time later this month and anyone with ADHD or who needs advice about it, is encouraged to attend.

Peter Svensson, 51, of Bishopstone, who himself has the condition, set up the group because he feels the town lacks the support which can be found elsewhere.

He said: “ADHD is more and more being found among adults.

“There is now a much better understanding than there was when I was growing but many people still assume it only affects children.

“Some of the traits may disappear in adulthood but it still remains.

“Other support groups have been proven to be very helpful for those who need it.

“Up until now the nearest options have been Oxford, Bristol or London, so obviously that's not so easy to attend regularly for most people in this area.”

The group will provide information on ADHD and give a chance for people to discuss their experiences.

While it is not for children, Peter is encouraging parents to come along so they can meet others in similar circumstances.

“People who have ADHD are just as capable as anyone else and have a lot to offer society,” he said. “One of the best ways of getting both a better understanding and the support needed to live a life much more in line with each person’s desire and potential, is talking to others with similar traits and challenges.

“The group can also help people who think they may have ADHD. When I was growing up there was not the understanding so it may have been missed in a lot of people.

“That said, just because someone has a single trait does not mean they have ADHD. Everyone shows some traits at some point or another but it doesn’t mean they have the condition.

“Life factors, such as stress, amount of sleep and diet can all have an impact.”

The first meeting will take place on Friday, November 22 at the St Paul’s Church Centre in Covingham.

It will start at 6.30pm and last for two hours. The next meeting will be on December 20. To find out more, visit www.swindonadhdsupportgroup.co.uk
