AN EXHIBITION commemorating the importance of Swindon’s rail links during the First World War is launching at the Steam Museum on Friday.

The display, marking the centenary of the conflict, will feature photographs and memorabilia from the period.

Felicity Jones, the museum’s assistant curator, said: “This exhibition follows not only the men who went to fight but also the men and women who were left behind and continued to be employed by the Great Western Railway (GWR) in many different roles. We hope it will give visitors some fascinating insights into how war changed the way of life of the GWR and its employees forever.

“In a time of enormous change, women became the new workforce while the men went away to fight. From munitions work, to transportation, including building specialist carriages, the railways had a major part to play.”

One of the highlights of the exhibition is a roll of honour which lists the names of GWH employees who died during the First World War.
