A GROUP of travellers moved on to the former Woolworths site off Faraday Road, in Dorcan, at the weekend.

About six caravans are at the site, some outside the gate of the derelict land. It is believed the group are of Irish descent.

The land is privately owned and police have spoken to the landlord about the matter.

Another group of travellers also moved recently on to empty land at the old Fitness First site on Eldene Drive, but they had moved on by yesterday morning.

A council spokesman said: “We do not own the land currently occupied by the travellers.

“However, council officers are liaising with the police to provide the relevant advice to the private land agents.”

Police confirmed yesterday they were attempting to contact the landowner but could not take action until a formal complaint had been made.

Prior to the high street chain going bust in 2009, Woolworths had a large depot located on the site which delivered all over the country.

When the group folded the building was demolished and the site left vacant. It is believed this is the first time travellers have been on the site.

Local ward councillor Richard Hurley (Con, Covingham and Dorcan) said the council was doing all it could but its hands were tied.

He said: “All steps are being taken and the police are keeping an eye on the situation, as are the public protection team at the council. I believe they have been spoken to, but with it being private land it is up to the landlord. We are keeping watch.

“My biggest fear is the mess which might be left behind and the affect this will have on the surrounding area.

“There were some on another site but they had moved on by the morning.”

The travellers were asked to comment but declined to do so.
