THE news that Swindon Council has decided to close the toilets in the town's main library is very sad indeed.
We are all well aware of the drug culture in our society and this newspaper has reported on several incidents where drug addicts have left their paraphernalia in public places.
But to indulge in drug taking in what is supposed to be a quiet haven for study or relaxing is beyond the pale.
The council says it had no choice but to shut the restrooms permanently and it is hard to disagree with their actions.
Library users, particularly children, and staff were being put at risk by used needles left lying around in a building which has been open for barely a year.
It certainly doesn't bode well for the new Central Library, which is expected to open its doors next summer.
Let us hope a solution can be found to deter such activity from happening in the future.
