YOUNG road safety experts were given a crash course in newspapers at the Advertiser.

Tyler Jones, Gina Popal and Alana Smith from Eldene Primary were the winners of Swindon Council's road safety competition, which has been running for more than 30 years.

The trio were given a tour of the Adver offices to see how the paper is put together each day, and met the reporters, photographers and sub-editors.

The council's road safety manager, Margaret Tester, said the annual competition was a useful way of combining fun with a serious message.

"All the schools go through the preliminary rounds," she said. "All primary schools are sent the question papers and are invited to send teams through to the finals.

"The standard is very high, and I'd like to think that that has helped with our child casualty figures, which are fortunately quite low.

"But also the important thing for us is that we use the answers for analysis to work out where we need to concentrate our efforts."

The quiz includes several questions about road signs and tests on how to cross the road safely.
