TRIBUTES to soldiers killed in the Afghanistan conflict will be laid at the official opening of the Royal Wootton Bassett Field of Remembrance on Thursday.

More than 20,000 poppies will feature in the memorial to servicemen and women who lost their lives from 1914 to the present day, including a section dedicated to those who died in the 13-year war.

Organised by the Royal British Legion, the ceremony in the walled garden at Lydiard House will see local dignitaries, members of the military and representatives from the Merchant Navy gather to pay their respects with a two-minute silence.

The service starts at 10.50am and includes a performance by the Military Wives Choir from the defence academy.

Lydiard Park is one of six Fields of Remembrance around the country including the National Memorial Arboretum in Staffordshire and the grounds of Westminster Abbey. Between them they hold more than 120,000 tributes.
