MEDICS said a driver was lucky to have escaped uninjured after his car left the road near Brinkworth and rolled four times before demolishing a hedge.

Police don’t yet know what caused the crash, which happened at 4.30am today on the B4042, but suspect the icy conditions contributed.

The BMW eventually landed in a roadside ditch and the driver, who was the only occupant, was taken to hospital by a family member

“There was one male in the vehicle who suffered no significant injuries,” Malmesbury Police told the Swindon Advertiser.

Great Western Hospital have called us to say he is lucky to have walked away from the accident and is being checked over at the hospital.”

Just a short distance away and a few hours later three drivers lost control of their cars on the same 50metre stretch of road at Haynes Knoll in Purton Stoke.

“Two have ended up in the ditch and the third one did a full U turn into oncoming traffic but luckily avoided any collision,” said Royal Wootton Bassett Police.

No one was injured but the crashes prompted a plea to drivers to slow down because of areas of black ice on the road.

Officers said: “These incidents have occurred within 50 metres of each other and highways have been contacted to come and grit the road urgently.

"It appears, from what we have observed, that people are not slowing down even when they can see other vehicles in the ditch.”
