TAKING a car without consent earned Jason Smith an eight-week prison sentence.

Smith, 37, of Moredon Park, admitted taking the Ford Ranger with another man on April 22.

Swindon magistrates heard the vehicle was damaged before it was recovered.

The defendant was already on a suspended prison sentence imposed on March 28 for shoplifting when he committed the offence. Smith was also ordered to pay £115 towards victim services.

Two brothers were remanded in custody after appearing in Swindon Magistrates' Court to face burglary charges.

The men were spotted behaving suspiciously on Wednesday, May 31, in Henley Drive.

Mark Bulmer, 23, of no fixed abode, and Gary Bulmer, 25, of Northampton Street will remain in custody until their trial on June 30.

A Stratton man will next appear before Swindon Crown Court on June 16 after being charged with one count of assault and one of carrying an offensive weapon - a screwdriver - on April 12.

Connor Gallagher, of Crispin Close, pleaded guilty to the offences when he appeared before magistrates on Tuesday.

Shane Hayward, 40, of Cavendish Square, will face a trial at Chippenham Magistrates' Court on July 5 after pleading not guilty to causing criminal damage and failing to surrender.

When he appeared before Swindon magistrates last month he admitted breaching his bail conditions by contacting his alleged victim. He was released on conditional bail until that date.

Nigel Hannon, 50, of Chapel Street, has appeared before Swindon magistrates and admitted using his mobile phone while driving.

He was fined £100 and told to pay a victim surcharge of £30 plus court costs of £85. His driving licence was also endorsed with three penalty points.

Homeless James McCarthy, 37, has been sentenced to 20 weeks imprisonment suspended for 12 months after breaching a restraining order. He must also pay £115.

A 28-year-old man has been jailed for six weeks for a string of offences including assault and damaging a television, bedroom door and wardrobe.

Richard Osbourne, of Roseberry Street, pleaded guilty to the crimes, dating back to May 27, and was told he must also pay £115.

Steven Borland, 44, of Radley Close, admitted possessing an indecent photograph of a child and distributing an indecent video of a child via a mobile messaging service.

He was given a 20-week prison sentence suspended for 12 months and told to pay a victim surcharge of £115 plus £85 costs.

A 40-year-old man admitted drink driving when he was brought before magistrates in Swindon earlier this month.

Laurentiu Dumitru, of Oxford Road, was fined £350, told to pay a victim surcharge of £35 plus a further £85 in court costs. He was banned from driving for 13 months.

Peter Gaffney, 45, of Whitworth Road, pleaded guilty to stealing a disk cutter when he appeared in Swindon Magistrates' Court.

He was given an eight-week prison sentence suspended for 12 months, including a four week monitoring period during which he will have to wear an electronic tag. He was also told to make a £115 contribution to victim services and to pay £35 towards the costs of the prosecution.

David Jones, 66, of Highworth Road, admitted stealing five bottles of wine to the value of £22 from Savers retail store.

He was ordered to undergo an alcohol treatment plan for six months and was told to pay an £85 victim surcharge. The stolen items were recovered.

Driving without due care and attention has resulted in a Toothill man having to fork out £525.

Percival Browne, 55, of Edington Close, pleaded guilty to driving along Beechcroft Road without due care and attention and had his licence endorsed with nine penalty points by Swindon magistrates.

Zamarak Jabbarkhel, of Broad Street, has been fined £110 for driving through Royal Wootton Bassett without due care and attention in June last year. 

The 29-year-old had his driving licence endorsed with four penalty points and magistrates told him that he must also pay an additional £115.

Christopher White of Westwood Road, is due to stand trial at Chippenham in August charged with taking a car without consent on April 22, failing to stop after an accident in Whitehouse Road, drink-driving in Westfield Way, not having insurance and being unfit to drive through drink.

White, 29, denied the charges when he appeared before Swindon magistrates.

He admitted an allegation of stealing alcohol from Asda on April 27 and was jailed for 13 weeks after the bench heard he had committed the offence while serving a community sentence for shoplifting imposed on April 19.

Michael Collier, 20, of Bourne Road, was fined for four driving offences by magistrates in Swindon.

He was riding an Aprilia Sonic moped without a licence, insurance, MoT or protective headgear.  He was fined £220 for the first offence. For driving without insurance he was fined £660, told to pay a victim surcharge of £66, plus a further £85 towards the cost of the prosecution. He was also given six penalty points. 

For the third offence he was fined £220 and for failing to wear sufficient headgear he was fined another £220.
