A TV antiques expert rolled into town on Saturday to discuss all things ceramic.

Antiques Roadshow’s Eric Knowles held a special talk about English pottery firm Moorcroft at The King’s in Wood Street.

The event, organised by jewellers Deacon and Son, saw pottery lovers come from all over Swindon to hear a passionate Eric talk about a subject he so clearly loves.

“I am delighted to be here today,” he said. “I have known about Deacon’s for donkey’s years and it seems that fate has kept us apart, until now.

“I love coming to different places all over the country to give these talks and I’m very much looking forward to meeting all the people who have come.”

Founded over a century ago, Stoke-on-Trent-based pottery firm Moorcroft made its name with collections of beautifully-illustrated “art pottery”.

The talk was titled From Sparta to Stoke, and involved Eric outlining the history of the firm.

Painter Hayley Moore also joined pottery lovers on the day. The artist, who started working at Moorcroft 30 years ago, demonstrated hand painting ceramics and “tube lining” – a technique for decorating ceramics.
