A SCHEME that helps children in care by recruiting adults to spend quality time with them is expanding in North Wiltshire.
The independent visitor programme run by Wiltshire Council is looking for more volunteers with good communication skills to provide support for children with special needs and disabilities.
They help by listening to the children’s concerns and taking a friendly interest in their lives. “Independent visitors can make a huge difference to the lives of children in care,” said Laura Mayes, cabinet member for children’s services. Everyone is welcome to come forward to volunteer for this rewarding role, and we are particularly keen to broaden the range of volunteers available to match with young people.”
Independent visitors are trusted adults from outside the care system who offer long-term consistent support to children. Youngsters are matched with the volunteers based on their interests and needs and will be visited every few weeks.
No formal qualifications are needed but volunteers have to be cleared through the disclosure service. Anyone interested can contact manager Sheila Lupton on 01225 713934 or email sheila.lupton@wiltshire.gov.uk.
