TOWN centre bosses say there are no plans to host an open-air screening of England’s semi-final match.

The screen at Wharf Green, which in the past has been used to show ballet and musical performances, is broken.

And an order banning people from drinking alcohol in public spaces in the town centre means fans would not be able to enjoy a pint with the game anyway.

Rachael Youd, business development manager at town centre group inSwindon, said: “We would encourage people to come into the town centre, as there are plenty of places showing the big game.”

The big screen fixed to Brunel West multi-storey car park is owned by Swindon Borough Council, but has been out-of-action for two years with town centre managers blaming issues with the screen panels.

Swindon Advertiser readers have backed calls for a fanzone screening of England’s World Cup Croatia match on Wednesday.

Other towns, including Ipswich and Sheffield, plan to host open-air showings.
