NEW bins have been put out across the town centre as part of the Swindon Business Improvement District’s commitment to creating a clean and tidy environment for visitors and businesses.

Sixty-eight Glasdon Jubilees bins have been installed with an increased capacity of 110 litres, 20 litres bigger than the old ones – they have also been given a new design in keeping with the new theme of the town centre.

The BID team, which patrol the streets of the centre, identified litter hot spots for new and damaged bins which has resulted in these areas having their bins replaced in Canal Walk, Bridge Street, Wharf Green, Fleet Street, The Parade, New Bridge Square, Bus Station, Regent Street, Havelock Square, Havelock Street, Temple Street, Regent Circus and Theatre Square.

Di Powell, the BID’s CEO, said: “These new bins will make a real difference to our streets and our overall town centre environment.

“They come hot on the heels of the recent programme to install hanging baskets and are part of a programme of improvements designed to enhance the appearance and ambience of the town centre.

“We need the active support of all town centre residents, visitors and businesses to help keep our town centre clean and ask everyone to use the new litter bins”

Cllr Garry Perkins, borough council’s cabinet member for the town centre, said: “One of our key priorities is to ensure the streets are clean and our residents are safe.

“We would encourage people to help us to do this by using these new bins. The town centre plays a vital role in Swindon’s economy.”
