A businessman has helped raise more than £18,000 for children's medical research charity SPARKS when he teed up alongside football legend Sir Trevor Brooking at a fundraising golf tournament.

Gordon Harker, manager of audiovisual specialist Bang & Olufsen of Old Town, Swindon, swapped flat screens for fairways as he led a team of four around Bearwood Lakes Golf Club in Berkshire.

The Bang & Olufsen Celebrity Classic, hosted by former Formula 1 driver and TV presenter Tiff Needell, saw 23 teams representing the Danish brand's UK outlets competing for top honours, each with a sporting star, musician or comedian on their side.

Gordon and his guests Andy Griffin and Barry Cole were joined by Sir Trevor, the former West Ham and England football star. He is now the head of development at the Football Association and a vice chairman of the SPARKS charity.

Other personalities who played on the day included former Goodie Tim Brooke-Taylor; sports commentator Tony Gubba; actor Miles Anderson; entertainer Kenny Lynch and former England rugby star Tim Simpson.

Gordon said: "It was a fantastic day and Sir Trevor was terrific. Our golf wasn't particularly hot, but Trevor made the day for us. He kept us amused all day with tales of his playing days at West Ham and England."

A spokesman for the charity said: "SPARKS is deeply grateful for the tremendous support we continue to receive from Bang & Olufsen.

"Much of the cutting-edge medical research that SPARKS funds, with the aim of helping more babies to be born healthy and grow up healthy, simply wouldn't get off the ground without the generosity of friends like Bang & Olufsen."
