A PROFESSIONAL DJ is calling on his home town to back his bid to be named one of the world's best.

Mark Eteson still counts Swindon as home and lives in Upper Stratton when not travelling around Europe as a professional club DJ.

Mark, 24, is a resident DJ at Birmingham superclub Godskitchen and has been on the line-up for dance events such as the Global Gathering festival.

But his biggest professional ambition is to be listed as one of DJmag's top 100 DJs in the world, an annual poll of clubbers and dance music fans, regularly topped by the likes of superstar DJs Tiesto, Paul van Dyk, Sasha and John Digweed.

He said: "It's the only poll in DJing that people pay any attention to.

"To make it into the poll would be a massive achievement for me, but I need help from people.

"I've even had my nieces and nephews on their MSN telling friends to go and vote for me, because they've got about 300 friends each.

"I don't expect to be anywhere near the top 10, but being even in the 80s would be amazing, as the top 20 are always the really massive people like Fatboy Slim and Paul van Dyk, as people will go to see them play a set just because they have heard the name and it's a big spectacle when they're on.

"All the clubbers know that this date comes around about now, and it's all over the DJmag website."

The former Kingsdown School pupil has been professionally working for four-and-a-half years now, having set up as a bedroom DJ during his time at Essex University studying law.

He regularly contacted a DJ handing over demos and one night, after a few drinks, emailed him asking for a chance.

Within a few days he was in London signing up with the same manager as Sasha, who was ranked seventh in last year's poll and the highest-placed British DJ.

Mark played at Swindon nightclub the Brunel Rooms in the early days of his DJing career and said he would be keen to go back.

It was nights by Judge Jules at the club which first gave him the interest in dance music but he has not been able to return in recent years.

"I know a guy there and he wants to book me with Godskitchen," said Mark.

"When I used to go clubbing there it was really good. People would come from Bournemouth, Southampton, Bristol, Bath, Oxford as it was a massive club, but I think it's lost that edge now. I'd like to see it make a comeback."
