THESE pictures are taken from a book called A Swindon Time Capsule.

Priced at £10 and available only from the Central Library’s ground floor shop, it is subtitled: “Working class life 1899-1084.”

The images are part of a huge archive known as the Dixon-Attwell collection, which was discovered by Mike Attwell following the death of his parents.

The introduction to the book notes: “Mike soon realised it was a treasure trove of information, so offered it to the local studies team, and after months of sifting through and dispersing not specifically relevant to local history, they were left with half a dozen large boxes and other files and folders, plus a small collection of books and other, non-paper items.

“The collection is centred on Mike’s grandfather. Jack Dixon, who was born in Swindon in 1899 and died in 1984 after more than half a century of employment in the Great Western Railway’s (and later British Rail’s) gigantic Works, which defined the town until its closure in 1986.”

The central library’s local studies team collaborated with Swindon Heritage to put the book together, and it was supported by a grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund.
