SAFETY concerns about a Stratton bridge have prompted Network Rail to close it and carry out two days of work.
The Lady St Margaret footbridge will be closed today and on Friday from 7am to 5.30pm.
Network Rail had just finished works on the bridge as part of its Railway Upgrade Plan to electrify the railway between London Paddington and Cardiff.
This work ensured that the bridge will meet safety standards after the new overhead electrification equipment has been installed.
The electrification will enable new and upgraded trains with more seats to run under electric power, which will be quieter for residents living near the railway.
After the inital works were complete, residents got in touch with the company because they were concerned that the amount of water that pooled in the centre of the bridge made it hazardous to cross.
To fix this issue, tarmac will be laid down to ensure that the bridge is level.
A diversion route along Ermin Street will allow people to cross the tracks near the bridge while the bridge itself is being worked on.
