A Swindon Town fan combined his passion for the Robins with his love of cycling to get him to a match that he will never forget.

Alan Wilson cycled the 70-mile round trip across the Cotswolds to watch his Swindon Town take on west country rivals Forest Green Rovers in Nailsworth.

It took him just over three and a half hours to arrive at The New Lawn football stadium.

He got the idea as he knows Dale Vince, the chairman of Forest Green is renowned for being 'green'– so he got in contact with the club to to make arrangements.

Alan said: “I’ve always had a passion for cycling and you may wonder what on earth that’s got to do with football, but I seem to be good at taking it to the extreme.

“The journey was a tough one especially the final climb, that was a killer and seemed never ending but there was some truly stunning scenery in each location I passed.

“Plus I made it without having to get off my bike once!”

Arriving at the ground around midday, Alan spent some time walking around the ground and says he stood out from the from the crowd in his ni-visibility yellow cycling jacket and socks, which he says drew some peculiar looks.

Setting off at 8:30am on Saturday from Shapwick Close in Nythe.

Alan's route took him though Cricklade, Cotswold Lakes, Kemble, Tadmarton, Avening and onto Nailsworth.

He had selected a route using country roads and single-track lanes.

And he said, even though he arrived with his Swindon Town flag, Forest Green treated him very well.

Alan added: “The club were very complimentary about my trip.

They even had a steward monitor my bike to ensure it would be there at the end of the match, so I could get home.

“The whole day gave me a great sense of achievement as it was a first for me. Will it be the last? Who knows.”

This is not the first unusual trip Alan has made to catch a game of football.

His love of the beautiful game has taken him to 159 matches in 32 countries across Europe.

He is also a member of the exclusive 92 Club for groundhoppers.

In order to qualify of this a person must attend football game at the stadium of every current Premier League and Football League club in England and Wales.

Alan added that provision for cyclists at football grounds has significantly improved, with more and more cycle parking racks installed at grounds but he added we are still behind places such as Belgium, Holland and Germany.
