FOUR generations of Alex Pollock's family have been employed in the building where the Great Western Railway's rolling stock was once built.

Now he has become the latest tenant to move into the newly revamped Carriage Worksheds.

The area previously known as Brunel’s world-renowned railway work sheds has been transformed into spacious 21st century office facilities.

His mum and grandma worked at this location in admin roles, but it was the 28-year-old's great grandfather Robert Tidmarsh who kickstarted the family’s connection to the site in his role as an overhead crane driver more than100 years ago.

Alex said: “This space is very sentimental to my family and even now it still has a creative environment.

“At first it was helping to build trains and now the building has adapted with current times which will help my social media and marketing company.

“The Workshed has the perfect combination of the rich history and look to it, it’s very aesthetically pleasing.”

When he attended a Switch On To Swindon event at The Carriage Works in June, he was inspired.

The founder of SocMedSup.com had previously looked at nine other places and even considered moving his business out of the town because he had not found a location that felt right.

He admitted was a bit emotive being the fourth generation to work under Brunel’s roof and added: “We’ve been very well-supported by Swindon businesses, so we’re glad we’re staying here.”

Alex started his social media and content marketing company two years ago with one employee and now has a team of 15.

As a stop-gap until their new office is ready, Alex has taken up a co-working package at Workshed using the upper mezzanine area.

Swindon’s iconic Carriage Works has been shortlisted in the Royal Town Planning Institute South West Awards for Planning Excellence.

It is one of only eight projects, plans and policies vying for the south west’s top planning award. The winner will be announced in November.

Swindon Borough Council is investing £2m in phase one of the site off London Street, which were part of Brunel’s Great Western Works and once the largest carriage works in the country.

Workshed’s centre manager Jol Rose said: “SocMedSup.com is an ideal tenant for our Growth Hub because they’re exactly the kind of fast-growing digital company we want to attract.

“We have three offices remaining, with co-working desk capacity for 150 people and if companies are looking to move, I’ll be happy to show directors round."
