Blocks of flats could rise on a triangular parcel of land used mainly as a car park in the town centre.

Developers Morse Street Developments, owned by Harry Barclay, want to build the blocks on the site at the southern end of Morse Street near the Brunel shopping centre.

The three blocks would contain 24 flats; 10 three-bed duplex flats in a terrace block, and 14 one and two-bedroom flats in other blocks.

Two three-storey blocks would be aligned opposite each other, continuing the lines of the houses along Morse street, with another smaller block in the eastern end of the site.

The application sent to Swindon Borough Council says there is an “opportunity to provide new dwellings for young adults to start their life in response to ever-increasing housing demand, and to others who wish to downsize from house to flat, and a strong opportunity to create a more attractive parcel of land in a key location through the redevelopment of vacant hardstanding.

It adds the development could also “improve amenity and the sense of social well-being and security to the surrounding community.”

The plans include 14 parking spaces, five for visitors, nine for residents and one disabled space, with secure cycle parking for every apartment,

One neighbour, a resident of Dixon Street has already written to object to the plans. He wrote: “The nature of these properties does not fit in with the scale and design of neighbouring properties.

“The developers cite the existence of three story properties on Dixon Street as justification for these designs, but these were either original to the area or were built to infill with modern design to fit in with what already existed.

“The massive looming nature of the proposed blocks 1-3 would damage the nature of the urban area in which they were situated. 33 Newhall Street would be completely overshadowed by Block 3 and the nature of the street would be changed for all time.”

It’s possible to view the plans on Swindon Borough Council’s website using the reference S/18/1429.

Representations can be made until Friday September 21.

A decision on the application is expected to be made by Friday November 23.
