A HEADTEACHER from Royal Wootton Bassett will be joining a mass protest about cuts to education outside Number 10 today.

Headteacher of Royal Wootton Bassett Academy George Croxford sent out a letter to parents to inform them that cuts from central government were being inflicted at a time of growing class sizes and rising costs.

He will join up to a thousand headteachers from across the country in the grassroots action which has been organised outside of any teaching unions.

The headteachers will gather at Downing Street to put pressure on The Government to increase funding for schools, and push the issue onto the agenda for the autumn statement, due to be announced by chancellor Phillip Hammond.

Mr Coxford wrote: 'Under a challenging period of austerity for the Government we understand that there is not a bottomless pit of money.

"It is clear to all headteachers, however, that matters are unsustainable. Frequently we do not have enough money to meet the demands placed on our schools.

'On the ground, services and resources are cut to the bone as class sizes are increasing.'

He also pointed towards an Institute for Fiscal Studies report which found school funding per-pupil had been slashed in real terms by 8 per cent since 2010.

Adding: ' It is simply not good enough for the government to state that 'more money is spent on schools than ever before,' when an indepedent evidence clearly states that in real terms, this is simply not the case.
