A new video for the latest single from rock band You Me At Six is based on the film the Big Lebowski.

Back Again is a style departure for the musicians and, they say, their most radio friendly single to date. It has already been chosen by BBC Radio 1’s Annie Mac as her hottest record of the week.

Chris Miller, lead guitarist with You Me At Six, said: “It was good to see the reaction to Back Again as it is different, the other end of the spectrum. The video we filmed in London and it is our own take on the Big Lebowski. It was great fun getting in to character and and we got some bowls.’’

The band will be heading for Marlborough’s Sound Knowledge Record store Hughenden Yard, on Sunday, October 7 at 6pm, to meet and greet their fans and sign copies of their new album, Vl, which they recorded here in the UK.

“Our last few albums have been recorded in Los Angeles and Nashville so we are excited about this album going back to our roots. It has been a year in the making and it is about not being scared to try new things,’’ said Chris.

Their first album, Taking Off Your Colours, was recorded 10 years ago this week, so the band will be celebrating the anniversary during their autumn tour by performing the album back to back for special gigs.

When You Me At Six was formed in 2004 in Surrey, the musicians were teenagers, and Chris says that it is their firm foundations and strong friendship that has kept the band on the right track.

“I was 16 and Josh (Franceschi, lead singer) was 15. We all met through the local music scene. Matt (Barnes, bass player) and I lived on the same road and played together as kids. So one day I got the famous knock on the door. Did I want to be in a band?’’ he said. “It was a dream of all of ours to do this, so when we had success we were determined to make this work. We have respect for one another and everything is on the table.’’

The guitarist admits that when they first started, as a warm up, the guys would sing the Fresh Prince of Bel-Air theme tune before going on stage.

“It took a long time, there are a lot of verses,’’ he laughed.

Chris comes from a musical background, his dad and uncle were both guitar players so there were always instruments around the house.

He started learning guitar at school when he was 12. He says he tinkled the ivories of a keyboard a bit but his main instrument and first love was and is the guitar.

“Matt’s dad is a bass player and his cousin Luke is one of our back up musicians on tour,’’ said Chris.

The guitarist remembers the first time he heard You Me At Six on the radio and says it was a strange and wonderful experience.

“We have the radio on all the time in the car travelling and at home and then suddenly it is you! It is so cool and the support we have had from Radio 1 is amazing.’’

The musicians were asked to perform in the BBC Radio 1 Live Lounge on several occasions and played at the BBC Big Weekend in Wales.

They have played various festivals including Reading and Leeds and the scooped the Kerrang Awards for Best British Band in 20011.

“I used to stay up late with my dad to watch the Kerrang awards on Channel 5, because I was into the more rockier sound than we are now. So it was cool to win the accolade that I used to watch on TV,’’ said Chris.

He says the musicians enjoy meeting their fans and seeing what they think.

The guitarist believes that performing at the big arenas is less nerve wracking than the smaller pubs.

“The more intimate ones you can sense what the people are thinking, while in big arenas you simply get into tour mode. I am more nervous when we have not played for a while.’’

The band will be playing a short set at Café Thirty8 before signing copies of the sixth studio album in Sound Knowledge in Marlborough. For more details visit https://www.facebook.com/SoundKnowledgeMarlborough/ - Flicky Harrison
